Spectrum

Overview

This started off as a very big project (creating a new social media site). However due to time constraints and changes in market trends it has been reduced to a 'micro blog'. Its full of funny stupid things.

What was it meant to be?

What was it meant to be?

Before it was designed, Facebook/ Twitter was full off irrelevant updates from friends e.g. 'just eating baked beans YOLO'. This tired me greatly and I became frustrated with social media sites. Overall content was boring and I lost interest in them.

The original idea behind spectrum.today, was that people could share content (image, videos, memes, messages etc) however the user could very much EXCLUDED content as much as include. In other words you could see your 'spectrum' of the day (spectrum.today). The content you want, in your format of choice.

Some people love food pic updates, some people like videos, some people just want funny animation, others want an arty Instagram vibe. Everyone is different, everyone likes to ingest information in different ways. Therefore spectrum.today was meant to solve this.

So what went wrong?

So what went wrong?

It's a good and bad thing really. The main reason is that Facebook and Twitter did a great job and started integrating images/ video into their platform more. What was a very heavy text experience has turned into a more multimedia experience. Therefore a massive influx of interesting material hit the scene rather than 'turkey sandwich YOLO'. This in my eyes has brought these two back on the stage. They have also added subtle 'mute' features which is handy.

What's the future of spectrum.today?

What's the future of spectrum.today

I think I will always keep it as a side project. As much as I love posting funny stuff on Facebook, spectrum.today still provides me with much more functionality. Although you can't see it, it has quite a moderately advanced custom made CMS in the backend that allows me to filter information. All built/ designed by yours truly.

Essentially who knows... Let's see what tomorrows spectrum will bring me!
